Headlines in the summer months of 2001 were consumed with stories of shark attacks along the southeastern coast of the US.

Popular Mechanics wanted to do a story about one young victim whose severed arm was actually recovered from the mouth of a shark.

After consulting with the head of the surgical team, this illustration was created to demonstrate the important structures and details of the arm involved during the reattachment procedure.
